Flag Day! Father’s Day! What did you do for your father? Cutting grass, buying cigars and fetching newspapers for your father are usual things to do. How about giving your father a special gift? Something he can enjoy and laugh at in his favorite chair. The owners of ASL Rose are sentimental and want you to give your father with the perfect gift, Have You Ever Seen…? An American Sign Language (ASL) Handshape DVD/Book (HYES HS DVD/Book). When you check the front page of our website, www.aslrose.com , you will see Uzi Buzgalo’s artwork, the father is reading his newspaper while his child is spilling his drink. Does this remind you of what you did to your father? How about making it up by giving him this product?

If you are interested in purchasing Uzi Buzgalo’s artworks, contact him at uzibuzgalo@comcast.net. His artwork is now nationally and internationally famous. You may want to purchase one for yourself and/or for your father. Anyway, fathers deserve nice gifts.

Summer is here! Beware swimmers! Guess who saved over 900 swimmers in Galveston Beach, Texas? Leroy Colombo, a graduate from Texas School for the Deaf, who was honored posthumously in the Hall of Fame at Texas School for the Deaf, and the school swimming pool has been named after him. His achievements are listed in the Guinness Book of World Records and the Texas Book of Records. One of his achievements was when Leroy, 12 years old, made his first rescues when a fire started on a tugboat and spread quickly due to oil around the boat, trapping two men. Colombo, arriving before authorities, braved the burning oil and swam to the men, rescuing them both. (HYES HS DVD/Book, page 11).

Did you know that there will be a CODA conference in Barcelona, Spain this July 26-29, 2007? What is CODA? The organization, Children of Deaf Adults, is an international group for hearing children of deaf parents. Two well-known CODAs provided quotes in our HYES HS DVD/Book. Babetta Trapani Popoff, a CODA, said, “I am a Deaf person who can hear.” Another renowned CODA, Bonnie Kraft, said, “I can hear but my heart is Deaf.” Guess what? Both co-owners of ASL Rose are NERDAs. NERDA is another “ODA” acronym other than KODA (Kid of Deaf Adults), SODA (Sibling or Spouse of Deaf Adults), and GODA (Grandchild of Deaf Adults), is Not Even Related to Deaf Adults. Don’t forget to watch the infamous CODAs, Sherry Hicks and Michael Velez’s company, “The Half-n-Half”, the multi-media performance on aspects of both deaf and hearing culture, combing ASL, music, and storytelling. (HYES HS DVD/Book, page 17).

There is another conference this summer! The Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf, a national organization for gays, bisexuals, lesbians and transgender individuals, will host a conferencee in Atlanta, Georgia, July 3rd – 8th, 2007. For more information, check its website, http://www.rad.org/conferenceflyer2007.htm . (HYES HS DVD/Book, page 34).

There are many activities that can be used with this product, HYES HS DVD/Book. One is to find out organizations’ upcoming conferences as mentioned above. The other is to find out who are our deaf heroes and have students write a short report with pictures. See Leroy Colombo’s pictures on DVD (not in book). Co-owners are working on a teacher’s guide for both audiences: deaf and hearing in four levels: elementary, middle, high school and college/universities. We are working with several teachers on this product to test the activities. If you have activities to share, please contact us. Thank you.
